When coming up with outfits for my daughters dance team we picked out the shirts, shorts and bow easily but needed one more thing to tie the outfit together, socks. I found lots of options on Amazon and sporting goods stores but when we came across a tie dye design we couldn’t pay $7 for the pair when we knew we could make them ourselves. So today I am sharing how to DIY tie dye your socks!
Next you need to tie rubber bands onto the sock. I used 4-5 rubber bands per sock. You can see how it turns out. If you want horizontal stripes you would just do rubber bands down the sock instead of from the sides.
The directions say to keep them on the stove and to stir for 30 minutes until you reach the desired color. I took them off and only did any initial stir until I was sure that the socks all were equally submerged.
When they sat for 20 minutes I took the bucket outside and dumped the water out and rinsed them with the hose until the water ran clear. This can easily be done inside the house if you are doing a smaller project but for the sake of ease of cleaning it was much easier outside.
Next you need to wash in cold water by themselves. There was still a little bit of dye that came out during the cycle and you don’t want to ruin anything else so keep your tie dye solo for the initial wash.
- The bigger the rubber band the wider the tie dye circle
- Make sure that you make the circles on each “side” of the sock.
- When you wash use cold water
- If using multiple colors be mindful of colors that will blend nicely if they touch and use bottles to apply dye.
